firing my discontinued pistol
I recently bought a used .40 springfield armory, model p9lsp and was told by the manufacturer that this pistol has been discontinued. The only part i can find for it is a barrel so i was wondering, should i preserve it or should i fire it as much as i would like? Thank you!

All your pistol is, is an EAA Witness that was imported by Springfield from Italy, assembled here, and renamed a P-9. The P-9 may have been discontinued, but thousands of EAA Witnesses come into this country every year and lots of extra standard and custom parts are available as well. So shoot as much as you want. The reason the P-9 was discontinued was that the gun buying population figured out that they were paying $100-150 more for the same gun, just to have the Springfield name on it. Springfield is doing the same thing now with the XD series of pistol. It was available for several years, but no one took notice of it until Springfield slapped their name on the side and added $100+ to the price. Unfortunately the original is no longer available at the cheaper price.
Anyway, shoot your P-9, have fun most people won't care. If they want a new one they can buy a new EAA.0 -
This pistol was made by Tanfoglio and marketed by Springfield. It is not quite the same as current EAA Witness pistols, but it is close. (The changes are in trigger shape and frame shape.)
These pistols were discontinued under the Springfield name in the early 1990s. Take good care of it, but shoot it as much as you want. The value will not be much affected.
Does the reference to P9 LSP mean "Long Slide Ported?" What is the finish?0 -
Actually you'll find a few variations of trigger guard design on the Witness as well, not to mention trigger design, and grip configuration. 0 -
lrarmsx, I referred to the P9 changes in relation to the current Witness frames. As you mention, the Witness frames changed at least three times of which I am aware. The first style frame had the "hooked" trigger guard as carried over from the FIE days. The second frame style had the "teardrop" trigger guard the same as the P9. The third frame style is the current "more square oval" trigger guard and the longer tang. I personally prefer the appearance of the "teardrop" style. 0 -
To JUDGECOLT. I am not sure what LSP represents, what you mentioned sounds logical. I bought this pistol used and didn't recieve any kind of manuals or literature. I love it though! We bonded at the shop so i bought it, and now it's like a father and his daughter. peace!

In regard to the designation LSP, are the slide and barrel ported? If they are not, then obviously my speculation about the meaning of the designation is incorrect. Please satisfy my curiosity. Thank you. 0 -
JUDGECOLT, yes the barrel and slide are ported. thanks, i'm glad to know something about this thing. Could i use parts from a CZ-75? I just recieved a reply e-mail from the custom shop at springfield armory that the p9lsp was a copy of the cz-75. 0 -
Big bro. Shoot it then shoot it some more. I am sure it is a better built firearm than my 40 and mine is discontinued too. I have about 4000 rounds through it and it still shoots as staight as an arrow. Plus I got the jamming problem solved so shoot up and piss of the neighbor for me. thank you for finally answering my question about the ported barrel and slide. I am sure you have a "Long Slide Ported" model. Again I ask, what is its finish?
I wonder why Springfield would give you such a misleading reply? While the Tanfoglio pistols are indeed clones of the CZ-75, I doubt that parts are interchangable.

Thanks for the info JUDGECOLT. Sorry it took so long to answer you. It has a black finish that is easy takin off. I got liquored up and bumped it coming into the house putting a scratch into it. THAT SSSSSSUUUUUUXXXXXX!!!!! I have decided to quit being a wuss and shoot it as i intended at the time of my purchasing it. I like it a lot!!!!
