Hey Hushpiti - The Smith long guns were made by HOWA. Same company that made the Weatherby, Browning and Winchesters back then. My biggest complaint with them was the quality of steel and the bluing on them (I had a .270, .300 Win Mag and 12 and 20ga 3000 pump shootguns) I bought the 20ga for my girlfriend to shoot skeet with, was only driven on sunny Sundays, cleaned and oiled after each use. Put it in the gun cabinet next to my old Moose-berg duck gun/canoe paddle/club that rarely saw the sun or a cleaning rag and the Smith rusted. I got disgusted and got rid of them all in favor of American Irons ... Kinda wish now I still had them though. BTW - Same guns (model 1500) are now made by Mossberg back in the good ol' US of A.

My experience with these is closer to that of hushpiti. I have both a Howa Golden Bear and an S&W 1500, both in .03-06, both purchased around 1980. Good rifles; sturdy and accurate. Perhaps Taz lives in a humid climate, as I've never encountered rusting problems with either rifle. The subject of these guns appears on this forum on a pretty regular basis, and the consensus has been that they are hard to beat for the money. I believe Mossberg only made/imported/sold the 1500 in 1986-87, and most of the parts in their rifles were left over from the S&W operation when S&W decided to again get out of the rifle business. Interarms then imported Howa rifes, but they also have gone under, and the current importer is Legacy Arms of Alexandria, VA. You didn't tell us what condition your rifle is in, or the exact variation of the 1500 model, but if it is the standard Hunter in approx. 95% condition it is worth about $265.

Der Gebirgsjager has it nailed. There are some really nice design elements to the 1500. Mine, in .308 shoots better than I do!

Not only is the S&W 1500 the same as the original mossberg 1500, it is also the same as some of the Weatherby Vanguards.

The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!
