Colt Detective special
I have two Colt Detective specials that I have acquired over the last two years. My main problem is how do i know what issue it is? I have one nickel and one blue. both have the full lug so that rules out the first issue. Is there any tell tale signs I should look for. Thanks in advance for any help.

What is the term used, when the
grip frame straps front, back and
bottom are exposed with two piece wood grips?
Is it "round butt standard"?0 -

Does the hammer strike a tranfer bar or is the firing pin attached to the hammer.??0 -
p0838's question is irrelevant because no Detective Special ever had transfer bar ignition. All "D" frame Colts have the firing pin mounted on the hammer. Apparently p0838 is thinking of the SF-VI, DSII or Magnum Carry, which use a transfer bar.
I have never been sold on this "issue" business for identifying variations. However, the Blue Book identifies Pre-War versions as "First Issue," Post-War as "Second Issue," and the shrouded barrel models introduced in 1973 as "Third Issue." There are several more important variations than three in my opinion. For instance, the change from square buttt round butt in 1933 makes two major variations in the "First Issue." The change from full frame to short frame in 1966 makes two major variations in the "Second Issue."0
