A few months ago, I ended up with a Winchester model 71 made in 1936.
What is the story on this rifle and caliber? I know it was discontinued in 1955 or 1956 but why?
A .348 is a pretty hard hitting cartridge. Was it just time for something new or did another manufacturer drive Winchester to discontinue?

sounds like 71 deluxe. in 21st edition blue book for 20" carbine shows $1800 for 50% 20" barrel is very rare. add 200% for pre war long tang.

I agree that it sounds like a Deluxe Carbine and at 50% it would be worth between $1800 and $2000. I see in my price guide that it says add a 20% premium for a prewar model. If your serial number is below 18267 it would have been manufactured before 1940. This is an approximate value as I haven't seen the weapon.

OK, BLUE BOOKS ARE GUIDES, LIKE USDA BOOKS FOR CARS, AREA & IF SOMEONE NEEDS IT FOR A COLECTION. I HAVEN'T SEEN A MOD 71 SELL FOR MORE THAN 1100 IN 90%+++++ EVER, & THERE IS ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS,BUT AT 50% CONDITION DON'T LOOK FOR YOUR FORTUNE HERE.

Make sure that it's an original carbine. There are some out there that have been cut to 20". You can tell by the front sight ramp, it is integral with the barrel. If it's original, you have a nice piece there.

The Blue Book is also a suggested retail price, not what a dealer or pawnshop would pay if taking it to them.
