Over all length of firearm

I have a friend who liked the Romanian Training rifle I bought,so well he also bought one. This guy can do most anything! He sawed the Barrel off down to 16 1/2 inches. As I told him the law said it had to be at least 16in.He also did an excellant job of working the barrel crown, and he had to use a drill. He sawed the stock down and reformed it. He sanded all the old finish off and varnished it. It came out looking like a beauty. He did all of this for his little 8yr old daughter, so she could squirel hunt with him. He put a little red dot bb gun scope on it. I dont know how he got it mounted anyone familiar with the gun knows a rimfire scope wont fit without some kind of modification.At 40 yrds we were knocking a pop can all over the place. Anyway a fellow officer I was showing a picture of the gun to,Told me the gun its self had to be so long. I checked under the code of VA. and all I found was barrel had to be at least 16in long. Does anyone know how long the gun overall has to be. Thanks in advance guys!! By the way it would take a real jerk to citation him or worse. I mean he fixed this gun for his little girl.

  Shotguns have to have an overall length of 26 inches so I imagine that gunmust be at least that long.

  rifle 16" from barrel chamber, shotgun 18" barrel from chamber, over all on both is 26"........these are minimums. you should always leave about a 1/4" more though to be safe.
