Saw it Off Myself??
Ok, I admit it, I am cheap. I like to save money when I can. I do like to follow the law when I can though. My question is: Can I saw off my Mossberg Maverick 28 inch barrel down to 18 ? inches and still be legal? I live in New York State. Thanks for any info. Rick

Check your state laws, But it should be fine. 18" barrel length and 26" overall length minimums. Keep in mind you will have a cylinder bore with a short barrel length = wide shot patterns. Remington put a modified choke on their 14" barrels to improve shot patterns. 0 -
The extra half inch is a good idea. If you cut it off with a hacksaw allow some extra so you can file it square. Take measurements from the muzzle and put a ring of tape on the barrel so you can see that you're cutting straight. 0 -
After cutting, you may want to blue the end to help prevent rusting. 0 -
I live in N.Y. and it would be fine cutting it down to 18" or 18 1/2"
As for the method to use you would be better off using a Pipe Cutter instead of a hacksaw. I have cut down many with the rotory pipe cutters and it works great, a little blue on the end and your all set.

All of the above responders are correct.
GHS nailed the OAL of 26". Just make sure of
the OAL. I do not wish to visit you in the

If you use the pipe cutter method (or also the hacksaw method) PLEASE be sure to carefully file or ream the end of the barrel so it is perfectly smooth on the inside. There is a shotgun barrel on display at one of our local gunsmiths with a badly split barrel as the result of being cut off with a pipe cutter and fired with the ridge still inside the barrel.
