Trim Dies

I'm relatively new to reloading...what purpose do trim dies serve and where in the reloading step should this take place and lastly Does this die replace the length trimming process? Thanks for Your Input!!!

  The trimming operation is the same regardless of what you call it. The file trim die used to be the best (only) way to trim cases to uniform length. Now, most use either a rotary trimmer or the old reliable Lee case holder/length gauge. Both work fine. The rotary is a little faster-maybe. The Lee is definitely cheaper and does a good job. The reason for trimming is that you need uniform case length for crimping or to control case lengthening. The reason that brass cases get longer will fill a book, but you don't have to know to make good reloads.

  Most typical use of trim dies today is in forming brass from a different caliber case of the same head size - e.g., .219 Zipper from .30-30 brass. For trimming regular brass to length, such a die is of limited utility.
