If I am not mistaken, when shooting mounted at balloons, the cartridges are loaded with crushed walnut shells. They also are provided at the event to prevent an accident with a participants homeloads.

I know a couple of people in Quik Draw competition. You can call Bob Mernickle up in Mission, BC - (604) 826-8834 or Email at sales@mernickleholsters.com . I went through the Canadian Safety courses with a couple of his friends. We talked about loads for this and for practice they use a shotgun primer and wax - no powder. I would call to confirm this, as I myself have never done it.

I was at a big shoot in Columbus, TX and I was interested in how they loaded the blanks. I started a conversation with the guy who was in charge of loading ALL he pistols used in the Cowboy Mounted shooting. He didn't know either, they use a "certified reloader" to supply them with all their ammo so he and I opened several of the blanks to see what was in them. The cases were sealed with a thin layer of wax and the only thing in the cases was a load of black powder and a primer. NO additives at all except black powder that we could find. Personally I would NOT want to shoot crushed walnut hulls in my revolver.

I made some close range loads for a 357 magnum that are fairly accurate to about 20 feet and are safe to fire out of revolvers .
1.Use cases that will never be used for any other purpose.
2.Mark cases so that they will never be reloaded with gunpowder again.
3.Drill out primer flashhole to one eighth of an inch. If you do not
do this, the primer will pop back and cylinder will not rotate.
4.Melt paraffin wax and grease using a 50/50 ratio.
5.Reprime case with new, unfired primer.
6.Fill cases with molten wax / grease mixture .This part will not
affect or detonate the primer.I have made hundreds of these with no
    problems whatsoever.
    7.Let mixture set for 24 hours .
8.Load up pistol and have some fun.
REMEMBER- DO NOT USE CASES FOR ORDINARY RELOADS AFTER FLASHHOLES HAVE BEEN ENLARGED.

24 HOURS IN A DAY ,24 CANS OF BEER IN A CASE !!COINCIDENCE??
