As far as shooting game animals at 1000yds Im not sure any sportsman could recomend that kind of range. Both calibers are suitable for north american game. Ballisticly the newer ultra mag out performs the winchester mag but thats on paper. As for the gun your limited to maybe a Remington or Winchester would be my choice. Hope this helps.

    Good Luck.

The .300 win mag has one heck of a track record at 1000yrds.I don't think anyone would rcomend any calaber be used on game at that distance.I shot both before making up my mind. The win mag has far less recoil,And will give better barrel life. The ultra mag looks good on paper. At responsable game ranges,I just cant see the advantage to the ultra.

    Just get a .30-378weatherby. 250gr @ 2954fps w/4840e...

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

The .300winmag was introduced in 1963 for the winchester model 70 bolt action rifle. It has a short neck meaning heavy bullets will have to protrude back into the powder space quite a bit.
    110gr HP w/80grs IMR4350 3600fps
    220gr Factory 2680fps

The .300rem ultramag was introduced between 1999-2000. Rifles previously chambered in the .300 Canadian Magnum can very easily be rechambered for the .300rem ultramag.
    140gr Barnes XBT w/100.9grs IMR7828 3609fps
    220gr ABW Kodiak w/105.5gr H50BMG 3016fps

Take a look at how they finished last week at the Hard Rock sniper match.Tree out of top five places 300 win mag with 210 gr bullets. No 300 ultras or 30/378 in top ten

I would have to say that at 1000yds, with a brand new caliber, some work on the 300 UM would be necessary to "tweak" it. The gun should be taken to a gunsmith right out of the box and headspaced. Epoxy bed the action for the recoil dampenening as well as accuracy improvement of a high recoil caliber. Square the bolt face and maybe build some epoxy pillars around the action screws also. My neighbor has a Sendero in 300UM and I was quite impressed. 1 hole at 100yds for the first three boresighted shots out of a brand new gun with factory ammo. Yes barrel life is a consideration, BUT, 1000 rounds is a long way off if you don't compete in matches often, so buy the one you want. Just be sure you are comfortable with the UM recoil level or you will never be accurate and would be better served with the 300 win mag. Just my .02 I am however becoming a fan of the UM's. Now for a comparable power level with what is theoreticaly more accurate, try the 300 SAUM from remington. Same velocity, but from a fat, short powder column.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

I would definately go with the 300 win. mag. it is a proven round that has been around for along time. I too am now looking at the 300 series but am choosing between the 300 win. mag and 300 weatherby mag. I believe either will work on just about anything that walks up to and including some of the bigger African game.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....
