Hunting with an SKS????
I found a good deal on an sks. $125.00 I new to the game and want to know if this would be a gun that I could deer hunt with? Or would I get laughed off the lease? I think it would be pretty good, but I have no idea how long the range is on a gun like this? HELP.

Properly sighted and/or scoped the sks make a decent deer rifle when used with hunting ammo. Do not hunt with the metal jacketed ammo, soft lead only. I also would not want to take a shot over 100 yards or so. I know alot of folks who use them in the mountains of NC with good sucess. Have fun !! 0 -
I remeber seeing at least two people on the lease last year who were using SKS's. I don't know how they did, just remeber seeing them.
I personally believe the SKS would be a great economical deer rifle. Sure there's better, but theres also worse. It may not be as ideal as a Remington Model Seven in a .260rem but its definately better than me getting lost for four hours lugging around my big a** .308 bench rifle... (My experience from my first deer hunting trip.)
I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.0 -
Your SKS will be a great Deer rifle with soft point ammo. The round is very comparable to a 300 Savage which has killed a gazillion deer. It's not quite as much energy as a 30-30.
....I never met a gun I didn't like!0 -
Not as much energy as a 30-30 at the muzzle but because of bullet shape they are dead on at 50 yards and at 100 yards the 7.63X39 has more energy. Still best to keep shots at game to 100 yards or less. 0 -
The 7.62:39mm was invented by the Soviets to compete with the 30-30.IT did fall short on paper. As Americans bought these excellnt guns some decided to give it a try on deer. At distances of 100yrds if you can get a good shot, you will ok. The caliber has become popular enough to be chambered in a Winshester Bolt Action rifle. Sounds as if the gun is holding its own.
Good Luck.

I'm working up a 7.62x39 AR project to do just that this fall.

Check your local hunting regulations. You might need to substitute
a five round magazine.0 -
Be sure you can use a semi for deer hunting in your state. In PA you would be on the game wardens most wanted list with a SKS. 0 -
I BOUGHT A SKS FROM AN OLD FELLA WHO CLAIMS HE TOOK DOWN A BLACK BEAR AT ABOUT 100 YDS JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO. I THINK YOU'LL BE FINE. I DON'T HUNT, YET, SO WHEN I DO, I MIGHT CONSIDER USING IT BECAUSE IT'S VERY ACCURATE EVEN WITH IRON SIGHTS. I CAN GET UNDER 6" AT 180 YDS AND UNDER 2" AT 100YDS WITH THAT SKS. GD 0 -
i use the 7.62 x 39 alot for deer even a black bear ..just try to use some soft point maybe even some of that heavier grain stuff 0
