i also have a remington 1100,it came with a slug and bird barrel from the factory the first time i shot at a deer with it,it was 110 yards and i knocked the deer down,i hit it in the front leg about 8 inches from the heart,i did get the deer,(iron sights)i bought the gun new in "93" and have gotten deer every year since then,i use what ever slug that is on sale that year, never needed the hasting barrel factory one has worked just fine, works even better now with red dot scope.

Whatever you do make sure you have a improved cyl. choke in it before running a slug thru..Some people say the slug shave's the inside of the barrel..My grandfather used his shotgun with slugs for years..

Please don't tell my mom i work in the oilfield..She thinks i play the piano in a whore house...

With a smooth bore use the best quality rifled slugs you can find.I use Brennke in my ithaca 16ga.They are the only ones i found that i can get tight groups out of at any range.

.......But start with the least expensive(if that kind of thing matters to you)name brand slug you can get. If it gives satisfactory results keep using them. If not, try the next brand and the next and so on.

You don't always get better accuaracy with the more expensive slugs.

And to answer your original question - No, probably not. But try what you have and see if the results meet your expectations. The barrel you have may be good enough at 50 yards.

I have a 1200 Winchester, 20 gauge, that the only thing it is good for is shooting slugs.I cut the Poly-choke off, and it now is cylinder bore. If you shoot Winchester punkin balls(slugs), it will make a ragged hole at 50 yds. How ever if you shoot anything else, you would have trouble keeping them on a small barn door.My father-in law has a High Stand 20 gauge pump, that if you shoot Federal slugs, you can hit a 2 liter bottle at 50 yds. with ease.
Now if you try shooting Winchester slugs in the High Standard, you can't keep them on a rifle target, at 50 yds.
It's all in the ammo. you try. Try as many different brands, as you can find, and one will really shine.
My 12gage 1100 loves 11\8 ounce Federals. I picked up a 6 point buck, off the ground, and broke 8 ribs when he hit a tree in mid air. These things are awesome!!!

    LOOK TWICE,SHOOT ONCE.

I bought one for my father in law about 10 years back, put a scope on the plain barrel-smooth bore and he used Remington and Active slugs. 2 years ago he go a 19 point buck in Illinois at 30+ yards shot.
Though others will say rifling is more accurate, it depends on the range, rifling while more accurate also costs more.

Am not recomending it, however I use a raw cast .546" 375 gr.
(Spencer 56-56) pure lead slug saboted in a white AA 20 ga plastic
wad column with 27.5 grs. Blue Dot in a Rem. plastic hull with a
folded crimp. Using a Rem 1100 with a slug barrel it gives great
accuracy and economical to shoot. Lyman Shotshell book shows loads
like this. Sure beats hell out of buying a box of 5 shells. Believe
velocity is in the 1350fps range. Mould I use is a Rapine 546-375
which is for my Spencer 56-56 carbine just so happens.
