I shoot 55 gr ballistic tips in both my Ruger # 1 and Remmington 788. One of my favorite rounds. Very accurate. Took a 24 lb turkey at 205 yards a couple of years ago. Should be fine for varmits.

Sir: I have a ruger M77 from 1980 in .243. I have used Remington .243 80 grain HP for years. In my area, I have hunted "woodchucks" or groundhogs. Over the past 20 years I have taken out probably close to 1100 with this rifle and ammo combination. I cannot comment on reloading but this is a fine caliber for what you have descibed in my opinion.

I have to agree with the 80 gr bullet being the best all around weight for long shots. In my experience the lighter bullet will become unstable at long distances and become inaccurate, now thats only my experience with my Remington model seven. Hope this helps!

    Good Luck.
