Stock Checkering
I was thinking about buying this rifle, a Winchester model 310. The rifle it self is in excellent condition 98%+ but the checkering on it is that pressed checkering, BUTT ugly! Has any one ever tried to rechecker a press checkerd stock or seen where it had been done and come out decent?

I have a Austrian rifle with a cracked stock. I have been in touch with the factory and am going there to pick up a new stock next week. An exact replacement is no longer available. The replacement is not checkered. Does anyone know of a woodworker that will do custom checkering. Naturally, I will have the old stock to use as a pattern.
Thanks,

I tried to get some custom checkering done a couple of years ago and discovered three things:
1. It is an art that's getting increasingly more difficult to find someone skilled at,
2. The turnaround on work was slow (weeks and months), and
3. The cost was about 3 times more than I had figured it would be.
I concluded the old hunting rifle I've been using for 30 years looked OK without checkering.
But if you find a good checkerer, be sure to let me know who it is and how to get in touch with him. My email address is bsebast@airmail.net0 -
Raf,
Well this sounds bad. Yes, smooth is starting to sound good!
Maybe I will get better news tomorrow.

I USED TO DO HAND CHECKERING (I'M NO GREAT ARTIST) BUT JUST A SIMPLE HUNTING TYPE PATTERN CAN TAKE UP TO 8 HRS. AND AT SHOP TIME OF $50 + YOU CAN SEE WHERE IT GOES. YOU CAN SPEED THINGS UP CONSEDERABLY WITH FOREDHAM TYPE CHECKERING TOOLS BUT THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. 0 -
There are a couple of gals that used to checker for Kimber that do excellent work and are fast and reasonable on their prices. They advertise in the Gun List under gunsmith services, I believe. One of them is on a website for gunstocks, Elk Ridge Gunstocks, I think. Give them a try, I think you will like their work, and prices. 0 -
Thanks for the info guys.

There is a regular on the forum that makes gunstocks.
budreaux39 --- never have seen his work, BUT it might be worth a shout to see what his checkering would cost you.

Just a suggestion, you might look at repairing the original stock. I've repaired a number of "cracked" stock so you would be able to tell, unless you KNEW where to look. Just a thought, Good Luck! ...Mark
