Spitzer bullet for 30-30

To fit in the box magazine, the bullets I've tried so far have to be seated so deeply that there is space between the case mouth and the bullet surface -- no way to crimp and no way to prevent the bullet from falling into the case if it's jarred. Just an unacceptable situation.

Sierra might make one, but as the fella above said how long is the magazine. Most levers 30-30 won't take the spitzer however your bolt might.

Thanks for the help, guys, but believe me I've tried. The magazine is long enough to accommodate a standard 30-30 round (max OAL 2.550) and very little if any more. The successful bullet, if there is one, may be along the lines of a "spire point" that has a longer straight section so it can be seated deeper and still avoid the situation I described above. I have used a 125 gr spire point that works fine but need a heavier bullet for deer. Thanks again & keep trying!

There shouldnt be any problems in a Bolt action, as long as you stay within specifications for this loading. Your going to add a little pep to a great caliber. Just dont try it with a Lever Action.

    Good Luck.

I know you want heavier bullets, however, I have the same gun you do, and this is the load I have used. It is more than sufficient for deer, and given the bullet, you will get excellent performance, if you can afford it.

RE 7 34.0 gr.; 110 gr. Barnes X bullet-moly coated with midway moly coat/powder form; WLR primer; case length 2.033"; COL 2.585"; 1 fired Win. case; light crimp; Avg. velocity 2,772 fps. Accuracy is less than MOA from my gun. Work with this, and you should be happy, adjust it as required if you dont use moly, or accuracy dictates. If you have a good sight system, you can zero this for 200 yds. be no higher than 2.4" at 100yds., and have 1780 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle, with 1019 ft. lbs. at 200 yds. ball park figures. If you compare this to the velocity of a 257 Roberts with a similar bullet of a 117gr. weight, with from 2600-2700 fps. I believe you will see the potential of this round as a good whitetail bullet.
Let me know what you think of it.
In case there is some confusion on my statements: The accuracy is inside of 1" at 100yds. The magazine will hold a bullet seated to 2.585", at least mine does, and it will extract and eject a loaded round, which can sometimes be a problem when going for max COL.

the standard factory over all length is 2.550". in your clip you may be able to extend that to 2.560" or 2.565" or so, (.005" to .020") or more, find the max lenght you can get from your clip, that will be your new seating over all lenght, also trim your cases to the min recommended length ( max is 2.039", min is 2.020") LOOK AT THESE 3 BULLETS SPEER # 2023 & 2025 HORNADY #3031 ONE OF THESE SHOULD WORK ALL 150 GR. SELECT A POWDER THAT SAFELY FILLS THE CASE UP TO THE RECOMMENDED LOAD TO THE BASE OF THE NECK OR SO, SO THE SEATED BULLET SITS OR COMPRESSES THE POWDER & YOU SHOULD NEED NO CRIMP (IF YOU FEEL YOU NEED A CRIMP DO IT THE CRIMP AFTER ALL THE SEATING IS DONE, NOT IN ONE OPERATION)

I recently did this with 165 grain spitzers and they shoot great! I single loaded them in a marlin 336 and shot 3/4" groups with a 4x scope. I followed the load data for 170 grain flat noses. I also shot them in my contender and backed off a little for the recoil. I would think that if you stick with 150's you should be very happy and load data will be transferable. I was amazed at how accurate a 30-30 really can be. You might need to set the bullets fairly deep but I didn't have any problems. I just seated them until a loaded round would eject out of the port on the 336.

    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!

I have two of these guns and reload Rem Power Soft Points 125 grs. and Hornady 130 gr. Spire Points both shoot great and should be more than enough for deer.

When You work up a load for your Bolt Action Rifle...Keep in mind that any of your friends with a Tube Magazine should'nt be allowed to use any of the expressed Rounds, the reason being that the Pointed End of the Loaded Cartridge will be pressing against the Primer of the Cartridge in Front of it...Its Possible that one good Jolt and you can have one or more going off in the Tube..!Best....
