Gun Law Question
I am confused. I have seen custom shops offering to shorten the barrel of a rife down to 16" and permanently attach a muzzle break. Now...am I allowed to do this without filing a form 1. And by muzzle break, do they mean a compensator or a flash hider....I thought that flash hiders were illegal on post-bans?

As long as the "muzzle Break" is permanently attached it is perfectly legal. You cannot thread the barrel to accept flash hiders and silencers....
When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....0 -
Look at it this way: If you cut a barrel to 16", permanently attach a muzzle brake that is 2" long, you then have a legal 18" barrel. This is not a "do-it-yourself" project; it must be done by a gunsmith. Personally, I would want the new barrel length to be 18 1/4" long, since the fellows with the bulges in the cheap suits are allowed to kill you if you are in possession of a long arm with a barrel a fraction of an inch too short.
Muzzle brake means the same thing as compensator. A flash hider is not, by itself, illegal; that becomes a problem only if you were to make a "semiautomatic assault weapon", as defined in the Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide.

NEAL; LEGAL LENGHT FOR A RIFLE BARREL IS 16", SHOTGUN IS 18". BOTH MEASUREMENTS FROM THE BOLT FACE TO THE END OF THE MUZZEL (14" OF BARREL + 2+" OF MUZZEL BREAK PERMANETLY ATTACHED (WELDED) = LEGAL 0 -
As long as your barrel is sixteen in long your ok. If it were me I would put a muzzle break-flash suppressor in one and permantely affix it. Just dont thread the barrel. hope this helps.

The biggest part of the question is permanantly attached. This don't mean screw on/threaded on. 0 -
ok....that was helpful....thanx guys.
one more question? What type of "muzzle break" can be used on a HK SL8/G36?.....thanx again!0 -
Presumably, a "flash suppressor" is a device designed to reduce the optical flash of a rifle, whereas a "muzzle brake" is designed to reduce recoil but not necessarily flash. I don't know of any legal definition, but if a manufacturer says it's a muzzle brake then that sounds sufficient. The problem is that the government will try to ensnare you when you are trying to follow the rules; no one is willing to be the test case in federal court either, and for good reason... 0 -
So if I permenantly affix a flash suppresser...its illegal but if I permenantly affix a compensator or muzzle break...its legal...and the only thing that makes a differance is which the manufacturer refers to it as. Is this correct? 0
