optics for AR 14, M4 flattop receiver

Can any of you guys comment on your experience with mounting a reddot or holographic-type optic on a Colt M4/A3 pre-ban? Did you need to raise the optic mounting height above the flattop to get more comfortable sight acquisition and/or to clear the fixed front sight...can you suggest a website or manufacturer that offers these raised mounts or "spacers." Any opinions on Aimpoint vs. Trijicon vs. C-More, etc.?

  Mounted a C-More, that was from colt on the post ban. The mount put it just right and when all lined up the red-dot ended up on the top of the front sight post.
