Glaser Safety Slugs

Real world statistics on the effectiveness of "frangible" or "pre-fragmented" ammo are pretty much non-existent; no LE agencies use it due to limited penetration and public relations concerns, and there is no reporting of the types of ammo used by civilians in self defense.

In theory it delivers more knock-down because the "bullet" expands as soon as it enters the body, rather than punching through without delivering its full energy. While ballistic test media seem to indicate that this is the case, there's no way to be sure.

The safety value seems a lot more important to many users. Ricochets and penetration through drywall and glass should be greatly reduced or eliminated. You shouldn't have to worry as much about killing an innocent neighbor or family member. My feeling is that this feature alone is worth the expense.

There have not been enough shootings to provide good Data on this ammo. However as a self defense round inside an appartment or your home where over penetetration is a concern, This ammo might be your best bet. I have fired a few rounds of it and it fed and functioned reliably. Hope this can be of help.

If I recall correctly, results of the Strausburg (sp?) tests on goats showed the frangibles to be by far the most effective. All the energy is transferred immediately.

I can speak from first hand knowledge. I carry a S&W 642 airweight in 38 Special and I always keep Glaser slugs in it. A few years ago I was forced to use this revolver in self defense and I fired one shot at my attacker. It struck center of mass and caused instant incapacitation, and death within a minute. I alays felt that if I only have five shots, I want to make each one as effective as possible, thats why I carry the Glaser rounds.

I've been in law enforcement for 28 years and all of my handguns are loaded with Glaser's. I've used them for about 15 years in .357, 9mm, .45 auto, 44 mag and even a little colt .25 - makes the generally useless .25 auto very dangerous. When I was a Detective Supervisor in charge of Court Security I had all of the personnel carry Glaser's inside the courthouse in the event of a shoot-out. I highly recommend them - they're also the deadliest coyote and other predator round available in handguns. Unbelievable!!

I'd probably use them, but they are so expensive. I only keep a few around for novelty shooting purposes. I carry Winchester FMJ .45acp, cause it works, and I don't need anything else.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

The above information regarding the effectiveness of the Glasers is correct. It is one of the most effect one shot stoppers out there. In addition to the cost, the reason you don't see it as a standard in law enforcement is the fact that LEO's on the street commonly would have the need for a certain amount of penetration (car doors, house doors, barracked suspects, etc.). For personal defense, in the home especially, it is great. You don't have to worry about going through three walls like you do with regular ammo. Out on the street you don't have to worry about richochets either.

As for the cost of the Glaser ammo. Two things: #1. You aren't going to spend the afternoon shooting this stuff at the range. Make sure your gun will cycle with it and know the point of impact. That is all you need. You probably won't need to do a double tap if you can hit what you were aiming at. #2. If your lfe isn't worth the price of a package of 6 of these, then you might as well just step out in front of a bus. When your life is on the line, $14-18 is cheap insurance to be breathing the next day. If not, you have a whole lot more problems to worry about.

What about that new federal expanding FMJ ammo, that will expand even when some regular hollowpoints wont, such as shooting thru drywall.
