scope on m-44

I have not done an M-44, but have done a couple of 91/30s with the Advanced Technologies system; and it is advertised to fit all variations of the Mosin Nagant. It worked out fine, but this does involve cutting off your rifle's bolt handle and drilling and tapping a hole in the bolt to hold the new handle on. The replacement handle is not a thing of beauty (but few find the rifle to be beautiful!) and it is stainless and does not polish well. It also requires drilling and tapping the receiver for the mount. The system works, and does provide a good basis for mounting a scope; but permanently alters your rifle. I know of no other mounts currently being manufactured, although I would expect someone else to start manufacturing another alternative soon; as there are so many of these rifles being imported, purchased, and used that a market opportunity exists. The main problems, of course, that prevent conventional one or two piece mounts from being used are the split bridge receiver which leaves no place to position a rear mount, and the straight bolt handle, which if unaltered, must turn to the vertical position when operated and won't clear a scope mounted directly over the bore line. Even the Rooskies used a very high side mount on their sniper rifles, and a stretched-out ungainly looking bent bolt handle to solve the problem. Currently parts for these rifles are inexpensive, so if you wished to have the "best of both worlds" you could obtain a second bolt assembly that would headspace properly in your rifle and do the Advanced Technologies alteration on the new bolt while retaining the original bolt for the sake of originality.

If you wanted to use a pistol scope, BSquare also makes a "scout" mount system, that mounts on the rear sight. There was a fellow around here a couple of years ago that rigged up a scout system by removing the rear sight and attaching tip-off rings, too.

I almost forgot, there is another fellow that makes a scout mount system for the M44 that looks pretty good:

What about mounting some PSO optics on it. It would look appropriate, and you can get them out of shotgun news for about $130, with the bullet drop compensator for the 7.62x54R in them. You would have to have a gunsmith fit the mount, but it would be detachable, and you'd still be able to use your open sights when it mounted.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

I had real bad luck with the PSO scopes. I sent one back two times because they couldn't hold a zero and I finally got my money back. Its a shame becasue I really liked the scopes. I have a 91-30 with a advanced tech. scope mount and the composite stock the scope mount is well made but the bolt handle is something to be desired. Overall the scope mount works very well adn is worth the money.
