looking for a long range (500-1000 yards) shooter for less than $1500 not counting the optics. would a yugo 308 AK with 20" barrel do the trick? any other sugestions would be appreciated. how about the ammo?

    thanks - V

Are ya looking for a large bore rifle?? If a small bore would do, then try Remington .17 cal in the 700 BDL series, Great Varmit rifle,

You didn't specify bolt, semi-auto, whatever--so for the money I'd recommend a look at the Remington Sendero series, and you'd probably have enough money left ofer for the scope! I doubt if you'll find an AK good for 500-1000 yards unless it's the Dragunov sniper-type rifle, and that will take more than your budget for a good one.

You should look into maybe the Dakota Longbow T-76 Engagement Rifle in a .338lapua magnum.

If you want semi-auto, theres the Springfield M-21 or M-25, those look nice. Theres also DSA's Target FAL. There's also the Romanian Romak III (AK type).

Those Dragonov "sniper" rifles are vastly over-rated. You're doing well if you can shoot 2" groups at 100 yds. with one. If you want the best long-range rifle that can be bought, find yourself a Springfield 1903A3 at your local gunshow. Find one with a high serial number. You can find one in excellent shape for under $500.00. Stick a good-quality scope on top of it (mounting kits are available- gunsmiths don't like drilling on the 1903's receiver- it's so hard), and you'll be able to hang with anybody shooting any high-dollar rifle made.

I thought the military was using the 300 win mag for the 800 yard range-Ralph

Nothing very, very good or very, very bad lasts for very, very long.

If you get a 1903A3, your going to end up spending alot of money trying to make it accurized for your needs, they have a reputation that far exceeds their actual capability. Your better off with a garand if your going that route.

There are many companies that manufacture accurized bolt rifles for under your price of $1500. All you have to do is go spend $15 on a shooter's buying guide and pick which one. There are also many cartridges to choose from. If you can stand the kick you may look into the magnum cartridges, there's both a great selection of long and short action magnum cartridges. If your not a big fan of recoil you may look into some of the non'magnum cartridges based on the -08 case. I personally am a big fan of the Remington and Ruger rifles. All you needs some trigger work, and an unltra high quality match barrel properly bedded in the right stock with you action, a good firm mount for some really nice optics and your in business.

I am not a rifle guy....however I have heard alot of good things about the Savage Tactical rifle. You can get them in .308 and .300 winmag. This is a good rifle if you cant afford the $3000-$5000 Dakota arms Long Bow.....if I had that kind of money to burn Id go for an AR50 or some other .50BMG
