For plinking around, hunting, and just to own one, yes. For defensive purposes or concealed carry, no.

Ammunition is really to expensive to shoot alot, unless you handload. They really aren't practical for defense. You should definately look at them before you decide, you may also see if anyone owns one, and go shoot it.

I just wish I had a dollar for every gun I wanted, then I'd be a rich man.

The biggest drawback to the one I shot was how loud it was... I had plugs and muffs, and it was still loud. Punched a big hole, but on the whole, I didn't like it.

I currently have 3 Desert Eagles. 2 50AE & 1 44 Mag. I reload and the cost is cut almost in half. I have hunted deer & hogs with the 50AE and let me tell you, its the most awesome pistol you will ever hunt with!! Loud. Damn right its loud. Ever hear a 454 Casull or a 3 1/2 magnum shotgun shell? I would agree that its not a good carry gun but I wouldn't hesitate to use it for home defense. Who in their right mind would keep coming toward a 50AE with the kind of power & muzzle flash this gun has? I also can tell you that they are TOP quality guns. The workmanship is excellent & I've never had a problem of any kind. If you can get one in good condition for less than $800, buy it!!

rg666 has it pegged. My 50AE is a dream to shoot. I bought the 10" barrel and had it ported, and it recoils less than some 44mag light loads. As for loud, well, if you shoot a bigger caliber, what would you expect? The bullets are not $50/bx either, they are $15/bx www.natchezss.com Speer gold dot 325 or 300gr hp. your choice.

Mine is wonderfully accurate, and YES it does deserve the reputation it has for power. That bullet won't even think about stopping. If you use it for defense, I would be damn sure there are no houses near by, it WILL end up in someone elses house, make no mistake about that. I shot it through a 8x8 railroad tie and it hit the ground about 150yds out in the field, blowing chunks of earth 20 feet into the air. Amazing power, and very well built guns. Be sure you can handle the size of the gun before you purchase it, it is very large.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

If you want to take the kids out for a day of plinking there not much good if you want a self defense weapon for concealed carry it is much to big. The ammo is very expensive, and you have to expect the hulls real good for cracking/splitting before reloading. But if you like the weapon dont let no one talk you out of it.

    Good Luck.
