it belonged to a gerneral so its in ver y good condtion. No piting etc. Is has a light colored wood grip and it says governmment property. how ,muich are we talking about 500-800 or like 300-400 hundread?

OK, let's start at the beginning. Now, as for your pistol, my SWAG is that we are talking about the $500-1,500 range. You still need to give us more details if we are to narrow it down any more. As for prior ownership by a general, if you have the original US Army sales slip, as well as other original documentation, it MIGHT be worth more than a run-of-the-mill pistol; otherwise, if you just have someone's word that it belonged to a general, that means nothing.0 -

ok on one side of the pisol it says " Colt's PT F.A.M FG.CO HArtford,CT USA PAD'd apr 20 1897.sept,9 1902,dec 19,1905, feb 19,1913" ok on the top of the triger guard there is a "w" and on the bottom near the mag release there it a "L"....on the other side there is"Colt automatic calibre 45." OK, now we're getting somewhere.
Your M1911A1 was made in 1943. It should have plastic grips, but the wood grips may be correct. It should have GHD stamped on the left side of the frame, and the ordinance seal on the right. The barrel should be blue, and should have a P stamped on the lug, and possibly a S in front of it, as well as COLT stamped near the lug. The magazine should have C-R on the bottom of the floor plate.
If all original and as you describe, we're talking about the $1,500-2,000 range.0 -
You can "know" for sure that it belonged to a General, and in fact in could have, but unless you can find some documentation to that affect it won't have any impact on it's value because without documentation there is no way a buyer can know for sure. 0 -

It would probably sell in the $350-500 range.0
