Colt New Army/Navy

I just bought a Colt New Army/Navy in the auction section and have a dumb question. I haven't seen the gun yet, but it is described as in good solid condition with a great bore. Assuming it is indeed a shooter, albeit only an occasional one, I want to make sure I use the right ammo. Gun Trader's Guide says it is .38 short/long. Is that .38 S&W or .38 short Colt? Or will either work? And does anyone make a downloaded round for this caliber along the lines of a Cowboy Action round?

  When you get it the caliber will probably be stated on the barrel such as ".38 Colt". If so, it is not .38 S&W, which is not the same, and probably won't fit into the cylinder. The .38 Long Colt was developed from the .38 Short Colt, and the .38 Special from the .38 Long Colt. The .38 Special will probably chamber in your revolver, but should not be fired. .38 Short can be fired, as the same relationship exists as .38 Special/.357 Magnum and .44 Special/.44 Magnum. .38 Short and Long ammo can be hard to find, but .38 Specials can be shortened and/or downloaded to .38 Long specs.

  Thanks for the info. I knew the caliber would be on the barrel, but ".38 Colt" would have left me in the same quandry. Thanks for the help.
