    When you get it the caliber will probably be stated on the barrel such as ".38 Colt". If so, it is not .38 S&W, which is not the same, and probably won't fit into the cylinder. The .38 Long Colt was developed from the .38 Short Colt, and the .38 Special from the .38 Long Colt. The .38 Special will probably chamber in your revolver, but should not be fired. .38 Short can be fired, as the same relationship exists as .38 Special/.357 Magnum and .44 Special/.44 Magnum. .38 Short and Long ammo can be hard to find, but .38 Specials can be shortened and/or downloaded to .38 Long specs.

    Thanks for the info. I knew the caliber would be on the barrel, but ".38 Colt" would have left me in the same quandry. Thanks for the help.
