Handguns for Dummies
I am new to the handgun scene and was wondering what the most powerful u.s. legal revolver, and automatic was. I the most powerful auto was the .44 Desert Eagle. Don't know if that is true. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think one of the most popular large handguns, or at least the most comonly known magnum handgun has to be the Desert Eagle .50AE, but the biggest handgun I've ever seen in person was a single action .45/70 revolver. The guy shooting that had some balls.
Now if you want the most hi-power handgun, I believe that there is a company who make a single shot .50bmg handgun. Don't remeber who, but I remember seeing it somewhere, maybe on gunbroker, could have been custom, but that has to be the most powerfull handgun ever.

Oh, just about the difference between a flea and an elephant.
The .50AE was developed in 1988 for the Desert Eagle. It fires a .325gr bullet at 1400fps producing a muzzle energy of 1,414ft lbs.
The .50BMG was adopted by the US military in 1918 for Brownings famous heavy machinegun. Currently used in the military M2 HB machineguns and the Barrett M82A1 anti-material rifle. It fires a 660gr bullet at 3080fps producing a muzzle energy of 13,910ft lbs.

Since I threw some number out, I though I might should give you a ruler to compare them by.
The common 9mm 115gr factory load goes 1160fps producing 345ft lbs at the muzzle.
The .45acp 230gr factory load goes 835fps producing 356ft lbs at teh muzzle.
