S & W Model 842, ever hear of it?
I was curious what the model 842 is. I understand it is from the early 1900s. Can anyone tell me anything about them, or where I can find a picture. Thanks

There is one listed on GB. I never heard of such an animal, but then I am not the historian I wish I were. It is listed under Smith and Wesson, pistol. It is listed as an early 1900's model 842.

After making a quick reference check could not find a S&W model 842.

The item number is #3775425. The individual listing it sent me a couple pictures, but I have no idea how to get them on here so you can see it. I don't know why he thinks it is a model 842. That couldn't be a serial number could it? I wouldn't think being that low. If you email me at thom@roundtower.org I can forward the pictures to you, I am not that computer literate as of yet. Sorry.

Ok, here's the skinny. I got copies of the pics and the gun is a
32 Hamd Ejector Model of 1903, or the best damn replica I have ever seen. I asked the seller for more info as to the markings and such, but no respones yet. From the pics it looks like the Real S&W. Unless the 842 is the s/n, which could be possible, or an assembly number, I have no idea where such a model number came from. There is no doubt as to what it really is. After a phone call to the right person at S&W , I verified that there never was a model 842.

Just heard back from the seller. The above post is exactly right. The "842" in the manfacturing assembly number that Smith used to stamp in the yoke. Since this gun predates the 1957 start date of the model number stamp there, it IS the assembly number. The actual model is the 32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 Fifth Change. The s/n puts the production of the gun around 1914-1915.

I also e-mailed the seller and got a reply that the "842" number is in the yoke area. From the e-mail, I think the seller may think this is the serial number, but am not exactly sure what he meant. I think the seller may have been unfamiliar with old Smihs and thought the assembly number was the model number at first, and now is trying to cover that error. Would not the serial number be on the butt of this old HE of 1903? 0 -
Looking at my 1'st model HE I see in very fine #'s in the crane area # 17585. I had never seen these #'s before. The serial # is on the butt and on the barrel under the ejector rod 121##.
