7.62x39 is so cheap now that it would not be cost effective. Powder, bullets and primers would be 8-9 cents a rd. at best.

I reload for everything I own except 7.62x39. Shoot the cheap stuff and have fun.

unless your loading up realy hot and heavy loads for a thompson contender or other singleshot strong actioned handgun or carbine or trying to reach out at distances over 250yds stick with the cheap stuff. reloading 7.62x39 just is not cost/time efective. these guys are right on track.

I know a number of guys that have done the math. Don't waste your time trying to reload 7.62x39. It will actually cost you more to reload, not to mention having to track your brass to reload it in the first place. Plus you also risk the problem of slam firing. Stick with the imported cheap stuff.

If you want to get a highly accurate load for an SKS, about the only way you can is to handload. Don't worry about the math, sure its not as cheap as the cheapest crap out there, but its cheaper than the best stuff out there, and handloading is the only way to get the most performance out of your rifle. The key is bullet seating depth and components. Find the bullet your barrel likes best, put the best combination of powder behind it, and adjust the seating depth till you get optimal group size.

When people see your rifle group, they will want to buy it off you, but don't let anyone know your secrets in the ammo.

I'm a nut for accurate shooting. (Actually, I'm just another obsessive-compulsive bonehead.) Anyway, I bought a DPMS heavy barreled AR15 upper in 7.62X39, and it groups okay with the cheap Wolf ammo, but I'm inclined to hand-load for it for the self-satisfaction and quest for the perfect round. I even want to go hunting with the gun. The question for you is on the bullet.

Can I load .308 bullets without any problem? I've got 1000 Spire point Boat Tails that I bought pretty cheap, that weigh about 130 grains. They should be some really sweet shooting bullets, but I see a lot of folks want us to shoot .312 or .310 diameter bullets.

    Your thoughts? Thanks,

    greg

Greg, you need to slug your barrel. The standard 7.62X39 is .312 but some (Ruger mini-30) are .308.

quote:I'm a nut for accurate shooting If you are shooting .308 bullets in a .312 barrel, not much chance for 'accurate' shooting.

If I was to want to play around with 7.62X39, I think I would take your DPMS barrel and make it 7.62X39 Ackley Improved - blow out the taper to a .440 to .410 slight taper and put a 40 degree shoulder on it and find out if the cartridge is worth a damn

If you shoot cast bullets, or if you could acquire brass for free, or bought powder in bulk of 8lb or more at once, esp. milsurp, then yes, it might be cost effective to reload. However the price difference is so small I wouldn't bother unless you plan to shoot the gun in matches where accuracy counts. And if that is the case and SKS wouldn't be your best choice anyway.
