it will depend on the type/kind of HP & speed, you didn't say what caliber, example the older style 32, 380 or 9m/m didn't, open much, the winchester silver tip, xtp, golden sabor, sxt, do very well, try wet telephone books.

Also, velocity is important. If the velocity is too low this will sometime interfere with expansion.

Like the previous post suggested, try wet phonebooks or bundled wet newspapers.

Occasionally material will plug the hollowpoint and prevent expansion.

Get an old card table and put about 8 milk jugs filled with water on it in a row. Shoot through the line of milk jugs and you will find the bullet in probably the 3rd or 4th jug. Yep its messy but fun :)

Hollowpoints are often known to plug up and not expand when going thourgh certain kinds of materials. Denim is well known for this attribute. This is all the more reason to pick a sufficiently large caliber with good penetration and take expansion as a secondary benefit.

The federal hydra-shock hollow point has a small rod looking point in the middle of the cavity in the end of the hollow point thats supposed to prevent that from happening.

From what I understand alot of factory hollow points dont really expand as advertised because they shoot it into material that doesn't accuratley simulate human flesh.

I'd say if you wan't to really know how good a hollowpoint is going to perform you should shoot a sheep or something with it. Something with a little hair, thin skin, and that will work best. Or go down to your local county morgue and ask the pathologist what works best, he'd probably know better than anyone.

Sorry, can't help you with your question. You see, we here in NJ are not allowed to play with HP ammo, lest we hurt someone. We can buy it, and keep it in our homes, but NOT in our guns.

Said it before and I'll say it again, you gotta love NJ, lol.

Charlie, do you mean to say that even the LEOs cannot use HP ammo in NJ?! If so, that sure is carrying political correctness to new heights of inanity!

I understand NJ also doesn't allow citizens to own semi-autos. An old school friend from back there told me hated my guts when I mentioned my Colt 1911...

I think the skulls of NJ politicians are too hollow to get the point
