What happened to Colt?
I guess I'm a bit out of touch but what happened to Colt? I went to their web site and could not even find a revolver??? No more Pythons or Anacondas???

When I was younger, in the 70's and early 80's I used to hunt, and had some rifles and shotguns. I quit hunting and sold everyting, but now I'm getting bak into target shooting and I've bought my first pistol in many years. All my life I grew up with Colt, Winchester, and Smith & Wesson. Now I hear that Colt is having hard times, as well as Winchester. Not much of a selection in the local gun shops. Anyone have any input as to what happened, and whether the classic old American firearm manufacturers are going to still be around? Also, why are there so many Stainless firearms, and the traditional old blue steel seems to have faded from favor. I still love the look and lustre of blue steel. I hope that someday I can buy a brand new S&W in Blue Steel, what do you guys think? Thanks. jg 0 -

jg, I could write a book (actually there are several already) to discuss the hard times that the American Firearms industry is having. In a simplified answer, gun control! Between the many added regulatory restrictions imposed under slick willy and the risk/expense of the numerous lawsuits, it has become too expensive for some to stay in the market. Colt has, in a large part, backed out of the civilian marketplace while S&W attempted suicide; both of these trying to limit liability. Further damaging the industry was the fact that, faced with shrinking profit margins (due to added legal and insurance expenses), many cut costs wherever they could. Unfortunately there are two ways to quickly cut costs - quality and new product development.
While an oversimplification, the above describes the main reasons for the problems Colt and S&W face.
The explosion of stainless is something else. As others have mentioned it is due to market pressure. It seems that many are either too lazy or too stupid to clean and properly care for their firearms. 'Nuff said.
