I've been using a ruger kp-95 9mm and find it to be accurate enough to hit coyotes at 40=50 yds and it doesn't look beatup from holster wear. It shoots lead and jacketed bullets of various loadings fine.

I'd go with a 1911 in what ever large caliber you prefer...(9mm, 38super, .45ACP, 10mm)....then get a .22 conversion kit for the smaller varmits.

In a 22 I would choose a Browning Buckmark Camper $220, In a 9mm I would purchase a Ruger P series. Both will work for the intended purpose and won't break the bank.

Go to http://www.jgsales.com/jgusedrif.html#usedhandguns and scroll down to Colt Woodsman or even better yet, go to auction #3723325. Better hurry because I might buy that one!

I live on a ranch and my "ranch pistol" is a stainless Ruger Single-Six 22-22mag combination. I use mostly the mag cylinder for everything from skunks to snakes to turtles. In the pickup I carry a scoped 30-06 rifle for more "serious" situations. In the house I have an old 30-30 Winchester, and in the nightstand beside the bed there is a Colt 1911.

All hi powers are manufactured in belgium by FN, with that being said i think a hi power will serve you well for your intended purpose.

Like my friend Rafter-S, I too live on a ranch and my ranch carry pistol is a Ruger Single Six with a 6 1/2 in barrel. I carry it with the magnum cylinder. I have carried everything from a Colt Gov Mod to a Ruger Vaquero in 45 LC. I prefer a wheel gun over a semi-auto for this use. If you just have to have a semi-auto I would suggest a Glock. Toughest SOB, straight shooting semi out of the box for the money.
