Colt Trooper Mark III
I am looking for a camp gun in 357 mag. I know I do not want a Ruger. What can anyone tell me about the Colt Trooper Mark 3. I always wanted a colt and the price on this model looks about right. Should I go with a Smith and Wesson? If so which one? Since this is for camping and hunting trips I want to keep the barrel length at 4 inches. This is just a back up to my rifle. Thanks for any and all input.

Value of Colt Trooper Mark III, Nickel finish, Stag grips, saw one in 85% or better condition at pawn shop for $400.00 thought the guy was crazy plus he would not budge. Given this is AK but still that is a high price I thought.

I agree with saxonpig, the closest you will come in S&W is a 586 or 686 they will serve you well also. 0 -
If the choice were mine, I would go with the S&W 686 over the Trooper.
Without the NRA, the second ammendment would already be gone!0 -
Thank you for the information. You just gotta love this site. I will hold and feel each gun and make an informed decision. My problem is I might want them all. Thank You again. 0 -
Carried a 681 in the early days as a cop - very strong .357mag.
The Colt is also a nice revolver. I guess it will boil down to which you like best.0 -
I have a friend that shot competition years ago with a Trooper and he swears by them. I acquired one myself (4" blued) but have it in my collection ( has never been fired.) so I can't personally tell you how good they are. If you want good and rugged you might want to check out a Colt King Cobra .357. I have owned one since 1992. Mine is more accurate than I am and as for tuff, it is stronger than a Ruger or Smith although I think the Gp100 and the Smith L frames are good solid dependable guns in there own right. I am a Colt man myself but I can't see you going wrong if you end up with a Smith 586/686. But check on Guns America they have deals on the King Cobra. I think, judging by your criteria you will like it. It also has the full lug barrel and you don't have to pay python prices 0 -
I am sorry about the above post I didn't know I wasn't allowed to use names of other websites on here. Did they change it when they went to the new foremat? If I would have known I wouldn't have done it. Sorry Mr. Moderater 0
