What would be a good scope to put on a ruger Mini 14?

This topic comes up all the time, and reflects the confusion surrounding the "Assault Weapons" law. Unless a Mini-14 is a GB made before 9-13-94, or had been modified with the forbidden parts by 9-13-94, it cannot now be modified with the forbidden parts no matter when it was made. This same confusion surrounds bare lower receivers made before 9-13-94. They cannot be now assembled into legal "assault weapons" either.

In order to be "grandfathered" in as a "pre-ban," a particular gun had to be in existance as an "assault weapon" on 9-13-94. No "assault weapon" can be created now, no matter when the parts were made.

Judge Colt is absolutely correct, as usual. If you still want to learn if your rifle was manufactured prior to 13 September 1994, just call Sturm Ruger in Newport, New Hampshire, at 603-865-2442. I have asked the same question (date manufactured), as well as others, about some used Rugers that I have purchased, and found the people at Ruger to be very helpful.

Most of the Ruger Mini 14's that have a beginning number of 185 or smaller are what you would call pre ban. Judge is correct in that only the GB is an assult rifle. There are some non GB models that were modified prior to the ban and that is OK. My 2 cents

There is plenty you can do to trick one out without violating the assault arms law. Many muzzle attachments that are muzzle breaks, not evil flash hiders. And all kinds of really nice stocks.

Judge is correct about the law. I believe that if serial # is not higher than 186, it's pre-ban (call Ruger to confirm), BUT like Judge said, unless it was an assault rifle prior to the ban, or a pre-ban GB model, you CANNOT legally make it one now, like adding a folding stock because it has TWO evil things on it already with the pistol grip and folder.

Some suggestions would be to change stock to a synthetic one with a QD Eagle or B-Square scope mount and a decent 3x9 power scope. That should be sufficient power for about 100 yds. Beyond that, the mini is not so accurate, unless you are lucky. A good group is under 3", so don't expect it to be a tack driver. You should be able to find most accessories on this site. Very fun gun to shoot. Enjoy. GD

I had the same questions several months ago about a Mini 14 that I was considering to purchase. I find highly offensive and to the point of a personal insult that this assault weapon ban exists. The average law abiding citizen who wants an assault weapon or assault weapon features on their firearm/s is the same as the law abiding citizen who wants a muscle car or who wants to put souped up high performance features on an existing vehicle - in most all cases simply because it looks cool. How does a folding stock, bayonet lug, 15+ round mags, and flash suppressor on a Mini 14 endanger the general public?

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

It's also interesting that a Mini 14 almost always gets involved with the subject about assault weapons. Was this rifle a poster child for the anti's at one point? GD

At least they got the politically correct term for it right. Now they are semi-automatic assault rifles. As far as most of the books I have say, an assault rifle was one that was selective fire or fully automatic.

    From Ruger....Cutoff dates for "pre-ban" (9/13/94)
    MINI-14...186-38000
    MINI-14 RANCH...188-79500
The 3 digit prefix on these serial #'s has not much to do with the date of mfg. The nice young lady @ Ruger gave me these #'s..
