Mauser Question
I've had an old Mauser for some time. It's a Model 1909 Argentino and I believe it to be unfired. It's definetly mint with all matching serial numbers. I always had the intention of having it made into a sport rifle but I guess I no longer see the need. I suspect it would be fun to shoot. If so, does anybody know what ammo would be correct? Then, should I shoot it or keep it unfired?

In looking for a mount for my Czech/98 Mauser - Midway lists two different mounts one for a Mauser 98 and one for a Mauser 98 FN. What is the difference between these two models?

I don't know much, but here is the little I do know. There are some books on this. You should look for them. I think I saw one at www.midwayusa.com . I think one of the main factors is the length of the reciever, the space between the bolt face and the chamber when action is open.
I've seen a large ring mauser chambered in .35whelen, but it was professionally smithed.

I'm not a gunsmith, but I have tinkered some. A large ring mauser can be barrelled for about anything up to 3.3" overall cartridge length. A small ring can use about 2.8" Oal. This is with out modifications. There are many variations of mausers. The VZ24 I'm working on now will not accept a 30/06 fmj round while a 1909 Argentine will. There are all kinds of magazine wells. The most important thing I can tell you is keep the pressure about the same as the original chambering. I have 6" of scars on my face and neck because I didn't.

What calibers can a Mauser large Ring Action be chambered in? How about a small ring Mauser? Also is there any manufacturer of Mauser better than any other? If so what the best? Whats the worst? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Rooky--Get yourself a copy of Bolt Action Rifles by Frank De Haas. It contains a wealth of info. Mobuck has got it right, use only cartridges which develop pressures no greater than the original chambering for the action being considered.0
