Want to shoot Bench Rest
I want to start shooting bench rest competition. I like the hunting class competition. Can you name a good custome gun maker and good action and barrel to use. I am partial to th 7mm bullet for its high balistic coeficient. I have shot a .308 short before in this type rifle at my local gun range and it was extremely accurate. Your advice on how to get started would be appreciated. Thear are no local organizations in my area. There are some I'm sure within my state of Louisiana but not sure where.

To save yourself some money over a custom action, I would find a used 700 remington and start with it's action. Have it trued by a gunsmith. Next, pick a Hart barrel blank and have the gunsmith ream your chamber for the chosen caliber. Then have the barrel and action epoxy bedded in a Mcmillian benchrest stock, install a jewell trigger, or a 2oz benchrest trigger, mount your scope and go.
As far as affordable custom actions, I would suggest a Stoli or if you want to spend the $$$$, a Nesika or Batt action. You will be in the $1200 range for the latter of the 2 actions, so make sure you want to compete bad enough to justify the expenditure. Your barrel and instalation work as well as reamiong will be in the $500 range, the stock will be $400 or so (depending on manufacturer) and the trigger about $250. Scope is your choice, ($600-$900) Leupold makes nice 1/8 dot benchrest scopes with target adjustment knobs.
Good luck, build yourself a one hole shooter, and have fun.
