There are many, many add-ons for the Mini-14. I ordered a couple things for mine: a barrel shroud, a muzzle break, and a recoil buffer. Check the laws in your area, but there are also (of course) folding stocks, Bullpup stocks, flash suppressors, drum magazines, and even a .22 barrel adapter, though I know nothing about it. You'll get a lot more if you do a search here for "mini-14" and check past auctions as well.

    Quick,

Saw your mention of a Harris bipod. I have a pre-ban mini-14 as well as an AC-556 and want to get a bi-pod for at least one of them. I would rather pay more for one that is for my piece rather than a one fits all (but none very well). How do you like the Harris?

    Thanks,

Quick, where in Kalifornia do you live? You need to find the nearest NRA Members Council and get some advice.

The Kalifornia assault weapons law (the section you are asking about is:
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
    (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
    (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
    (B) A thumbhole stock.
    (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
    (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
    (E) A flash suppressor.
    (F) A forward pistol grip.
    (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
    (3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
    (4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
    (A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
    (B) A second handgrip.
    (C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
    (D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
    (5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
    (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
    (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
    (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
    (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
    (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

Re: 30 round magazines - not illegal to own if you owned them PRIOR to the law against them being passed. It is illegal to manufacture, import into the state, sell or give away any hi-cap ammunition feeding device.

Do a search for "mini-14 and accuracy", I think it may take a time or two, but you will find a company named something like Accuracy systems or accuracy international or something like that. They make heavy barrels in various lengths, calibers, and weights. they also glass bed the action, install larger gas blocks, and install tuned adjustable triggers. This is the way to trick out a mini-14 and turn it into a tack driver instead of an otherwise mediocre shooter. AND, none of these modifications has any illegal ramifications.

    When in doubt...empty the magazine!!

Unless you live in the PRK, I would suggest looking at a standard Bushmaster AR-15, out of the box much more accurate and by the time you get done souping up/accurizing a Mini 14 ranch rifle, probably less money.

Nothing you can do to a gun is illegal, it's the gun laws that are illegal.

I don't know about in Kalifornia, but here in the US, we have something called Ex Posto Facto, means after the fact in latin.
You can't make a law today, and arrest someone for breaking it yesterday.

If you owned it before they banned it, then its not illegal to own. Not to say they cant restrict the heck out of it (I.E. NFA Weapons), but they can't take it away from you.

    Totally agree with 'kimberkid'.

If you are going to put money into a Ruger, at least start with a Mini 30, instead of a Mini 14.

Save yourself the money and considerable expense of trying to make the Mini-14 into a target type rifle. It can't be done in any reasonable way. The Ruger is a good light caliber utility rifle and is useful for many applications; but accuracy is not it's long suit.
Have fun and shoot it as Bill ruger intended; a plinker and fun gun!
