I only seen one of these for sale, it only stayed in the shop 2 hours. The price was $205.00. As far as I know ammo is extremely hard to find. I didn't see any for sale yet. So expect to pay a premium for the ammo.

If you find a 17-V for sale it should be between 195 and 205 out the door. If you find the bullets they should be 9.99-10.99. I'll bet if you find the gun the dealer may have a box of bullets to sell you with the gun but not a whole case!! There are dealers in VA who have sold the guns but didn't have any bullets and dealers who got maybe 10 boxes of bullets but no guns!!! I've got the bullets but no gun!! It will all break loose about July I'm predicting and then you'll find them everywhere!!! GHD

GD I live in Virginia too. I dont know if you have been there but Nuckols Gun Works has a Ruger. I am going to a gun show next sat in Elkins,WV and I hope to find one there. If I find a 17V it will be gone. A friend of mine ordered the Ruger and he says he has a catalog that has ammo for it by the case but he couldn't remember the price. What kind of scope you think it should wear?

FreedomCasull, I'm kinda partial to higher power scopes. I geuss that comes from shooting benchrest a long time ago. I think a good quality 4-12 would do very nicely on your 17. That way if you want to squirrel hunt in the woods you can see well enough to shoot eyeballs on the lower powers at short ranges and out in the groundhog fields you can turn it up to see his whiskers vibrate when the little V-Max smacks him. I'm going to put a 6-18 Redfield on mine that I have left over from about 1978 or so. Just where are you in VA? I'm down near Roanoke in Franklin County. GHD

I have a shop in Oklahoma. Ive sold a total of three 17
two Ruger one marlin. Sold the marlin for $189.95 Rugers
for 10% over cost. If you come thru Oklahoma I have rounds for $10.50
I also found some on this sight that went for $22.00 that's a ripoff.

GHD I live around Monterey in Highland County. Back here in the hills. Plenty of places to hunt millions of groundhogs to shoot and rivers to fish. it is a really nice place.

FreedomCasull, You're not that far and I have to go to Harrisonburg and Lewisburg, W.VA quite often. I caught some big ole' trout around Monterey when I was a kid!! Give me a note and we'll hook up and catch a fish or make a groundhogs day turn into the great hereafter! GHD charliemill@ earthlink.net

Freedom, Actually the only time I've ever gotten to fish in that country was when I was about 12 or 13 and got to catch some over at Monteray. That's not real fishing I guess but for a kid it was fun!! I'll take you up on the late summer hog hunt! I don't usually shoot much before the middle of May. I'll hunt kudzu banks or places where you won't be able to see them once everything greens up but I like to let them "seed" in the regular hunting places. I have seen some places get overshot and need a couple of years to come back. So I spend a lot of time in the reloading room and at the bench getting ready! GHD

Ha Ha I dont let em seed because they dig more holes and there is nothing worse than losing a wagon of hay to a goundhog or a calf leg. I assure you there are plenty to go around. I have a ? for you. I have killed 13 groundhogs and all 13 have been females. Do the males sleep in in the spring?

I don't have an answer for the female question other than they are more active due to getting ready to have young and possibly need to feed more often. I have seen them repeatedly in and out of dens carrying nest building material into the den. I know all about those wagon deals!! Been there, done that!! I am a farmer also. I have a horse farm on the lower end of the county where I live that I'm going to try to get permission to hunt because I got to shoot it one day a few years back and killed 8 in about 2 hours and had more that I couldn't shoot because of horses, buildings or not knowing what was behind them. I think that place would be the ideal test ground for the 17HMR!! If they've lost a horse to a den then maybe they will be a little more receptive of the hunting. GHD

GHD, I envy you! That is a beautiful part of the world you live in! Took a group of high schoolers over to Gap Mills, WV 3 summers ago for a youth mission trip. Took a day trip over to Roanoke. Can't remember the name of the park we went too. Kind of like going back in time. Started out with a 1850'ish settlement, then went back to 1700's, then to an Indian village from the 1600's. Kids and adults both loved it. The drive over the mountains from Gap Mills to Roanake was BEAUTIFUL! Going through all those little WV and VA hamlets off the main road was like going back in time 60 or 70 years. I don't want to wish my life away, but I can't wait until retirement in 25 years, give or take a few. I have found my heaven in the mountains of WV or VA! Already looking for some property. Take care!
