ruger 1022
I am thinking of buying a semi auto 22 rifle. Can someone tell me what they think of the Ruger 1022? I want something fairly inexpensive and thought the 1022 might be what I am looking for.

I was under the impression that unless it had a folding stock prior to the ban that it would be illegal to put 1 on now. You can replace a folder with a folder but to take a rifle with no folder and put 1 on is a no no. Anybody know for sure? 0 -
a .22lr rifle with a folding stock is not considered an assult rifle so its ok. 0 -
This comes up again and again, maybe I should put something up on my web site and link to it. We're talking about rifles and the 1994 federal "assault weapon" ban. Any semiautomatic rifle regardless of caliber that accepts a detachable magazine is defined as an assault weapon under current federal law if it has any two of the following five features: (1) folding or telescoping stock, (2) pistol grip, (3) flash suppressor or threads for screwing one on, (4) bayonet mount, (5) grenade launcher. If your rifle meets the definition but it was put in that condition before the law went into effect, it is allowed. But you cannot take a rifle that didn't meet the definition before the ban and convert it into an "assault weapon" now even if it was manufactured before 1994.
It is a curious consequence of the law that if your rifle had two or more features before 1994, you can add more or change it and that's still OK, it isn't any more of an assault weapon if you have 3, 4, or all 5 features. How would anyone prove it was or wasn't modified prior to 1994 if all the parts are from prior to 1994? Beats the heck out of me.
If you have a stock Ruger 10/22, it has none of the forbidden features. As I understand the law, in most states you can add any one feature and you'll be OK. Personally, if I were modifying one I'd consider a Dragunov-style stock (I think that counts as a pistol grip = one feature) but that's a matter of taste. Beware, some states (CA is one, I think) don't allow any of the features.0 -
has anybody been convicted of doing any of these if so i have not heard of any. i attend a lot of gun shows in three different states and have not heard of any convictions. please post or show me a web site that has these numbers. i know it is against the law but there are alot of other problems out there besides someone installing a folding stock on there 10-22. just my two cents. 0 -
I'd say put it on, I see them on post ban 10/22's all the time at gunshows and no one ever says anything about it being illegal or anyone going to jail for doing it. But don't take my word for it, check it out yourself. My 2cents.

I'd sure hate to be the guy they make an example of. I'd find out for sure before i'd alter a gun if there was any doubt it could be a felony. 0
