Horsepower
Can any one convert muzzel energy to horsepower? Say using a 30-06 in a bolt action rifel.
Horsepower is something an old gear head like myself can relate to.
Thanks TOOLS1

Can you give me the formula you used?
I was also woundering about length of barrel. If you think of the bullet as a piston then the barrel would be the cylinder. So would the length of the barrel be equel to stroke?
Thanks TOOLS
Hay Jonk I know you can answer this!0 -
By definition, one horsepower will lift 550 pounds one foot in one second. A 30-06 will shoot a 173 grain bullet,2750 feet in one second. The bullet weight in pounds is 173/7000 or .0247lbs x 2750 = 67.96 hp. 0 -
Thanks for the fourmula.
Thats more horsepower than some small cars. Now I can realy brag about horsepower per cubic inch when bench raceing.
Thanks TOOLS0 -
V35 Your formula is correct except you did not include the coeffecient of Drag. Weight in # x Velocity in FPM/33000 x Coeffecient of Drag or coeffecient of Friction = H.P.

I didn't sleep well after my answer because the number seemed too high. Since the topic didn't quietly go away I'll have to admit my error and correct it. The units of my earlier answer of 67.96 are foot pounds per second which need to be divided by 550 foot pounds per second per horsepower for .124 or 1/8hp, my final answer. 0 -
Is that your final answer? Please stay tuned to..... Tha WEEKEST LINK!!! dun dun dun.....

Darn, I was just going to power my suburban with twin cam .200's till you re-figured your formula's. Oh well back to the 455 big block, just when I thought I had "MORE POWER"!
