Anyone know what the value is on a used S&W model 28 6in barrel about 70%.

I hav a S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357 mag it has NYSP stamped on the barrel and is about 95% condition.My question is the fireing pin is on the Hammer should it be carried with the hammer on an empty chamber?I dont plan on carrying or useing the gun,but I was wondering about Revolvers with the fireing pin attached to the hammer as to how their supposed to be carried?

My Blue Book says $180 in 70%; but I think that's a tad low. I'd ask $225. You can always come down. Hard to go up! 0 -
My S&W model 28 has a 4 inch barrel. It has been Magnaported, has a red-ramp front sight and white outline rear sight.The "guts" were worked on by the folks at Magnaport and it has the best double and single action trigger pull on any S&W that I own.What are the chances you could buy it for $180 - $200 from me????? What are the chances that they are serving grape popsicles in Hades????? 0 -

Hi Mr. German Bird Hunter Yes I do --- the point I was trying to make -- perhaps not as well as I might have liked -- is that there are other factors to consider if they are present. They could change the value of the Model 28 considerably. 0 -
Very definately! The smoothest S&W I ever had was also a 4 inch Mod. 28, which was otherwise plain-jane. It was truly a marvel how that big, heavy cylinder could turn almost effortlessly! I discovered that part of the job had been accomplished by thinning the mainspring to about half-thickness; which accomplished the great result but is not the best way to go about it. I let it get away for a Mod. 66, also a 4 inch. Regrets, regrets. Guess you can't keep 'em all. Treasure yours...there are a lot of good guns, but you only get a few really outstanding guns in one lifetime. 0 -
I used a S&W 28 for years when I was with the Sheriff's Dept, it was a 4" model and I loved it.
When I retired they sold it to me for $20.00 or $25.00, I still carry it from time to time, mostly when I take a walk in the woods, still feels good on my hip.

There are other factors to consider as well. Is there a -x after the model number? Is it a pinned barrel or a recessed cylinder. In this area these type guns in 4" are running 250-300. A 6" is a rarer specimin and worth a little morre.
