bill: hi I own both ,the contender is built on a smaller frame and is in smaller cal. where as the encore is made larger and can handle just about anything, both are very nice guns just kind of depends on what you are planning to do with them. if you decide to go with the contender I would wait until the new model is out which should be any time now, i understand they have made some nice change to it and the best part is all the older barrels will fit on the new frame [This message has been edited by gskyhawk (edited 04-09-2002).]

I would go with the Encore. It has all the accessories and different barrels etc already in production. It switches over in seconds and is accurate as the shooter. The trigger is refinable as well, a friend of mine got his down to about 1 1/2 lbs. Just with a polisher, not even switching springs.

Bill,I'm a contender fan so I guess I'm a little biased. All T/C products are great. The company stands behind them and are a pleasure to deal with if something does go wrong (lifetime guarantee). The difference between an encore and contender is about 16 oz. in weight plus the difference in barrel weight for the longer encore and the fact that the encore does NOT shoot rimfire rounds. It will digest just about any centerfire rifle caliber you want to put in it. So you will need to decide if you want a really short rifle (encore) or an oversized pistol (contender) or BOTH! I have about 20 different barrels for my contender, everything from 22 LR to 7-30 Waters. You really can't go wrong with either gun. I'll also put a plug in for The TCA (Thompson Center Association) Check out their web site, great people, special offers on T/C products, etc. I must warn you though, T/C shooting tends to be addictive-one barrel, then two, pretty soon you just can't stop. Have fun and good shooting
