The model A has a different bolt that has a trip and trip spring along the bottom of the bolt. It also has a different firing pin than the model B.

Both of them fire from the closed bolt.

What model fires from an open bolt? I have a parts kit that was stripped off a machinegun, that I was going to use to build a legal semi auto carbine with (throwing away the auto parts and short barrel) and I just don't see how it can operate from a closed bolt. The firing pin on mine is fixed in place and there is no hammer or anything.

None of the legal semi auto UZI's were an open bolt design. Both the A and the B models fired from a closed bolt. Yes the full auto ones do fire from the open bolt. At this time, I don't think there would be any way to legally build an open bolt weapon. You may be able to use some of the parts you currently have, but a new bolt assembly would be in order, plus a great many other parts will be needed. That of course is why the parts sets are so cheap, they aren't good for a whole lot of things in the realm of remaining legal.

To make a Uzi Model A semi into a machinegun, all you need is a machinegun bolt like leeblackman describes, and the full auto recoil spring. The frame of the Model A needs modifying by taking out the "rail" on the right side (that rides in the slot of the semi bolt). Also, when you reassemble, don't include the fire/safe selector switch or the semi auto firing pin spring. The gun will now fire full auto from open bolt, with the only safety being the grip safety.

A few fixed firing pin bolts were made with "slots" in them, thus eliminating the need to remove the rail from the Model A frames.

With the Model B, there is one other step necessary: a small block of metal was added (in manufacturing) in the bottom of the frame. It needs to be removed before the trigger assembly will function in full auto.

What is described above in highly illegal. DO NOT MAKE A MACHINEGUN. IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW. IT IS A FELONY OFFENCE. Don't cut a slot in the open bolt you now have. From what I understand, that is also against Federal law. In fact, you being in possession of the full auto parts you now have could be in violation of Federal law.

I learned all this when I was a lot more stupid than I am now. If you want a machinegun, go about getting one legally. It is not too difficult...and a lot less expensive than your legal bills will be if you're caught with an illegal one.
