removing lead buildup
I have a High Standard 22 with a muzzle brake. There is a significant build up of lead in the pocket below the bore. I've some questions: Does this build up indicate some kind of misalignment which would affect the accuracy? I have only fired about 100 rounds offhand and the results are poor, probably due to me. What kind of accuracy should I expect, say with a rest. Also would a bore cleaner as discussed back on 4/3/02 be useful in removing the lead? If so will the amonia harm the finish on the outside of the barrel? Thanks for any help.

If you use J-B Bore Paste or Butch's Bore Shine, no they will not hurt the bluing. The Butch's can be hard on some finishes, so don't spill or drip any on your favorite walnut grips. 0 -
Don't leave this stuff on for too long as it is mildly acidic, but if you mix a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar and let it sit a minute or so, you will get a gooey paste of lead out. Works and is easy to make!

Try using "Shooter's Choice - Lead Remover" and/or "RB-17" as a bore cleaner to remove that lead buildup. Most bore cleaners/solvents in general will remove "lead fouling". A chemical cleaner like the two cited above will do a better job and will not harm the finish. 0 -
Thank you Jonk, the vinager and peroxide mix worked like a charm. 0
