M1A question - unintended bolt closure
Please consider this question as coming from a rookie: M1A. Bolt secured back either manually or after the last round. Install new magazine and the bolt immediately slides out of lock and closes, picking the round and loading. NO slam fire. The bolt does not seem to "set" in the rear position and has (and will) randomly close on what appears... to be its own accord. Never had a slam fire nor double fire. Feeds a variety of ammo with no issue. Locks back after the last round 100% of the time. It appears that it's on the edge of being held back and the movement of the insertion of the magazine will randomly allow it to release (and close and load). This is not only a close-on-magazine-insertion issue. It will randomly do it with no magazine in place and during normal handling on the bench.Any comments or ideas. The rifle operates quite well otherwise...thanks,

Weak bolt hold open/stop spring, drive out the roll pin, and replace the coil spring. 0 -

I'm sorry, I should have been more thorough in My posting, Hold open/ bolt stop is located on the off(left) side of the receiver, it is the button/lever that releases the bolt. It is held in place by a roll pin running parallel to the bore, a small roll pin punch and a no mar hammer is required to drift the roll pin out towards the rear of the receiver, once the pin is out, the bolt stop/hold open lever and spring can be removed, replace the spring with one of greater strength and that should solve Your problem. 0 -
Jody,I tried finding a replacement spring but Saturday evening is not the time to do it (tried...) Regardless, diddling the existing spring seems to help so it looks like your advice was on target and I just have to get a viable replacement. Thank you very much for the advice !!!enjoy, 0
