Define relic. pertaining to Curio and Relic license
Someone told me that a relic is a firearm,that is over 50 years old,and has a special feature, unlike any other. But wouldnt these still be modern firearms? And wouldnt they still need a Federal Firearms License?

Unless something has changed recently not all 50+ year old guns are C&R. In fact a lot of them aren't, but some newer guns are, or could be. A C&R is any gun that's on the ATF C&R list, and if it isn't on the list it isn't C&R no matter when it was made.Date of manufacture is just one of three categories which can make a gun ELIGIBLE to be classified as a C&R. Basically, a C&R has to have some characteristic, such as age, unique markings, oddball design, etc, which makes it collectible to bona fide gun collectors, and only ATF can make that decision. But a gun made before 1898 is an antique and not under ATF jurisdiction. I'm just going from memory on all this, but I think I'm remembering it right.Confused? I think that's the main purpose behind this stuff. They make the laws so vague and confusing it takes a lawyer to understand them. That way honest gun owners can be made into criminals without even knowing it until ATF breaks down your door. 0 -
kaboom, I was as confused as you, so I requested written clarification from BATF. I received a letter from the chief, Firearms Technology Branch, BATF, stating:"The 50 years of age from the current date criteria qualifies any firearm manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date as a curio or relic; however, the firearm does not have to be specificlly listed on the curio or relic list."Neal 0 -

Quoted from the Federal Firearms Reg. Ref. Guide, "Curios or relics must have been manufactured at least 50 year prior to the current date" (page 119). There are certain exceptions for newer guns but 50 years old will do it. 0 -

I wonder if there is a misinterpretation here? The quote says a C&R firearm must be manufactured more than 50 years ago, but it does NOT say that all firearms more than 50 years ago are C&R firearms. It is my understanding that, unless a firearm is on the list, it is not a C&R no matter what its age. Of course, antiques are a different matter entirely. 0 -
Read the reference. There are three definitions of C&R'S. The 50 year thing is the first. It then says or certified by a musuem, then or deriving its value from unique feature. I see no way to interpret this but that all guns at least 50 years old are C&R's until you get to the antique age. 0
