The military used to use these as guard ammo, for sure, and possibly in combat. Possibly civilian prison ammo, too. Is there a headstamp, and any markings on the top wad?

Top is marked "00" with a b underneath printed in a circle on what appears to be waxed cardboard with Winchester and No 12on the bottom

WWII ammo, was alot of it around after the war, they tried to use it up in Vietnam. But found it was too old, and it corroded easily in the humid jungle climate. They used commercialy made ammo after that. You should have taken the 5 bucks, I know a guy that has cases of the stuff.

These brass shells were a development from WW1. The paper shells in wet trench didn't work very well, so the brass cases. The military continued to use them after the war, but I'm not sure how far after. I am sure a number of these brass shells were used in federal prisons and guarded site because of they're availability, but weren't developed for those particular applications.More of an oddity now ...not much value. God Luck! ...Mark
