I may not be a expert but I own the same gun, my father gave it to me for my first. I can think of thousands used in michigan for deer, bear, and I Think they will tip over a pig without any problem. The 30-30 is a good round to about 100yds +or-, my first 10 deer where taken with the same gun. Good gun in my opinion.
Though I was born to royalty, I was snatched at birth, so treat me as the noble I am!!!

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I must say that it certainly lookslike a nice gun to start me off with.

I have (among others)a marlin 336 with a 3-9 scope that shoots 1/2 inch groups. SCHWEEEEEEEETTT. I've done A LOT California pig hunting!!!!!!!!!! The typical deal is heavy brush= short shots then open hillsides = long shots. You have to be ready for either. A 30-30 with a variable scope will work nicely if that's what you have, especially in oak/brushey forests. But given a choice I strongly prefer something like a short barreled 308 or 30/06 carbine style ie: Remington 742. Be prepared for big herds!! Either way a 3-9 40mm scope is the hot setup. Avoid long barreled guns, they get hung up in the chemise.
    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!
