I haven't bought one yet, but I will be within the next 6 months so I've been pricing them out at gunshows. One that caught my eye was a Champion brand, 35 cubic feet (sure looked like a lot of room to me!), it was resistant for 1200 degrees for 60 minutes, for a price of $1399. Most everything else I've looked at at that price was only good for about 20-30. But I don't know much about that brand so maybe someone here will comment on it.

Gunnut is right buy the biggest thing you can find! I bought a Liberty Washington 40 several years ago thinking I would never fill it up. Now I need another gun safe. My personal recommendation is the Liberty brand!I know ther are alot of good safes out there but I really like my Liberty!!

I found one problem with gun safes. They don't seem to hold as many as they say. Till you get all those scopes rifles and bolt actions in their and your garands. My 28 spot gun safe only seems to hold 26, and if I didn't use it to only put my better guns in. The real working space would only be about 24 guns. Buy as BIGGGGGGGGGG as you can. I made the mistake didn't save enough and bought to small.

ditto in the big ones. Mine says it will hold 48, BS!!!!! damn if I can find out how. Anyway, I have a Browning and it is extremely nice. Very smooth operation and fire proof. They come in 4-5 different colors to match closely, your interior decorations at home. Here is the skinny, all good ones have the same lock (sargeant and greenleaf) if they don't, don't buy it. Second, get one with as many "lugs" in the doors as possible, this makes it far harder to get into. There are plenty out there in your price range.

I bought a Fort Knox about a year ago. Advertised to hold 52 guns. Yeah maybe pistols. But I can get 36 longuns in at one time. Besides that I would buy another Fort Knox in a heart beat. And if you ever move to a new house within 50 miles of where you are now, they will move it for you for free.

LOOK AT THE CANNON 50" WIDE BY 72" HIGH.THE 72"VS 60" IS A LOT OF PISTOL ROOM. THIS ONE ABOUT 1100#. CRITICAL IS THE FLOOR SUPPORT UNDERNEATH AND THE STAIRS OR OTHER PATHS TO LOCATION. ELECTRONIC COMBO IS GREAT

Number of years ago my home was burgled. I lost three S&W First editions P&R 629's: 4", 6" and 8n3/8", all in wooden presentation case's. Insurance paid me $2000+ because they were unfired and not replaceable. After the fact I got a safe...My new gun safe cost me $1100!!! I have an American Security safe, a model which I do not think is made any longer. It has a 1/4" body and 3/8" Door fire protection and is heavier than hell empty. I would NEVER buy a safe of lesser steel..NEVER NEVER, NEVER. WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT WAIT...DO NOT WAIT...DO NOT WAIT....DO NOT WAIT...need I say more...yes...mine is for about 15 firearms, well it is stuffed,,,get one for about 20 guns....again: DO NOT WAIT, DO NOT WAIT.MIKE

I have a Liberty Washington 50 - 48 cubic feet and fire rated 1200 degress for 30 minutes. Biggest model Liberty makes. I know a guy who has 6 of them. Very very happy with this model, not the cheapest but it very well constructed. Receive lots of compliments. Get the de-humidifier device.Liberty has a web site. www.libertysafe.com Good Luck !

pabooger, Nobody asked where you live. There are other concerns you may need to be aware of if you live in California. If not then just buy big. I picked up a 10-rifle safe/closet last December and got another one this month. I will probably get another next month. See you don't have to buy big you can just buy in quantity.Jim

I OWN A TREADLOK SAFE-IS FIRE PROOF,BUT BE AWARE WHEN I BOUGHT MINE ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO FIRE PROOF MEANT THAT IT COULD WITHSTAND A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DEGREES, BE IT 1500 FOR 1 HOUR. THIS I BELIEVE IS THE FIRE RATING. WHAT EVER YOU BUY WILL NOT BE BIG ENOUGH BECAUSE MINE IS ALREADY FULL. I AGREE THAT FORT KNOX MAKES AN EXCELLENT SAFE. I BOUGHT TREAD-LOK IT WAS AVAILABLE CLOSE TO HOME WITH NO SHIPPING CHARGES,ETC.

To all those who are looking to buy a gun safe please consider some recent developments with Browning/Pro-Steel gun safes of which fifty percent are now being made in China and brought to Provo, UT for warehousing and shipping. I bet that info is not in the catalog. About mid-2002 they were looking into having safes welded and painted in China and then bring them here for interiors and locks. It worked out so well that they soon had the safes completed before they made the voyage across the ocean. These safes used to be completely built in Provo, UT by men and women of all ages and many were BYU students. Things are unfortunetly much different now. Food for thought as you look to put your money down on a safe.

Pa--when I did my searching for a safe, I spoke to an insurance man about fire protection and safes. He said the vast majority of losses are due to break-ins and not fires.

Accordingly, one would consider spending the extra $$$ for a better quality safe (more lugs) even tho the fire rating is zero. My .02.

My next safe will be one made by Zanotti Armor. They're not fire proof, but what I like is that they are modular. They unbolt into 6 pieces, which means you can easily move it yourself whenever you move.

I have been in the fire service for many years, & can't recall the last time that I saw a house fire where temperatures became elevated long enough for the heat to damage guns in a non-rated safe. If your guns are really valuable, &/or you live in a rural area, you should consider a residential sprinkler system in addition to a safe.
