Don't know how much help this can be but when I wanted to add the ultimate long range rifle to the arsenal (ultimate to me!) it was a Remington Sendaro in 300 Win Mag with a Redfield variable power scope with exposed target knobs (bought it on clearance from CDNN). The reasons were that since I reload I can make it shoot like a 308 or 30-06 but have the ability to make it even more powerful. There are so many bullet offerings in 30cal, plenty of choices at reasonable prices. My range only is 100 yeards but I can shoot half dollar size groups on a rest all day long. That was my thinking at the time and I really enjoy this rifle. Good luck, Ed

the 06 case will handle bullets over 170gr better than 308, below that it's a toss-up.most if not all of the potental 06 speed advantage has been lost with that 20" tube.the 308 case seems to have more potential for accurcy.Surplus (practice) ammo is more available for the 308It sounds like you are going to be doing more target work than hunting so IMHO go with the savage in 308Recoil will be slightly less with a 308 assuming the same weight of rifle[This message has been edited by Tailgunner1954 (edited 03-23-2002).]

BALISTICALY, I have serious doubts about a 30-06 which only has a 20" barrel. Even if it is a hart or some other manuf. I would, given only those two choices, go for the Savage. UNLESS, you can be persuaded, as previously mentioned, to go with the Sendero. It is a great gun right out of the box. I have one in 7mm mag, and at 300yds, it's groups are still quite impressive. Matter of fact, I filled out a crop damage permit last night for a nice doe taken at 325 yds through the neck with the Sendero. But if you won't go for that, then I would suggest the Savage with a stainless bull barrel. just my .02

The guy with the 20 inch -06 needs to get rid of it and you don't need it!!! Why would anyone build a rifle and not take advantage of the extra length of barrel? Yes I have a 40-X barrel in 222Mag that is only 20 inches! But that caliber is not losing a whole lot of effective range by being shortened to 20 inches. If you want a big bore, long range gun go with the Savage if that's the only two choices. But if you might opt for something else, look around awhile!!
