Insurance on Gun Collection

My insurance agent said that my guns were covered only up to $500, although standard coverage may be higher now. I had to get, at extra cost, a rider that listed the guns and their value. After a couple of years, I realized that financial loss wasn't my greatest fear: My biggest worry was that someone bad would steal my guns and use them to kill innocent people. So, I cancelled my gun insurance and bought a good quality safe; I have more than paid for it with the money I saved in insurance premiums.Neal

Hi, My standard policy doesn't cover more than $1000.00. However for $36.00 a year it boosted it up to $5000.00. Any more than that they wanted a list of the guns and serial numbers and the value. Now I keep my best guns at my dad's in the safe and the rest at my house. So this actually gives me $10,000 of coverage, because any guns lost at my dad's would be covered for $5000.00 and any lost at my house would be covered for $5000.00.

At one time the NRA offered a basic line of insurance and you could raise that with an additional payment. If memory serves, they did not require a serial number.

I agree that a fireproof gunsafe is the solution. Once the safe is purchased there will be no annual expense for gun security. I considered loss by theft as the greatest risk and fire being secondary. A safe cracker can open a gun safe but most likely a burglary would be unable to.

Mine is good up to $10,000. With my low gun buying budget, that is plenty for now!

A safe is a visual deterent and given enough time any safe can be broken into or carted away. ATMS weigh far heavier than most safes a homeowner would have and they get hauled off. I have a safe and insurance just in case the unthinkable happens. As far as fire goes, even if the temperature in a fireproof safe doesn't reach the temperature to char paper doesn't mean your guns, scopes, or other accessories won't be damaged in a fire. Sate Farm home owners covers up to $2500.00. An extra "rider" policy for $98.00 a year kicked mine up to $25,000.00. They requested list but no ser#'s. A good safe is a must.
