The EG looks right from the serial number. But it may be possible to get closer to date from the change chronology below. The EG was introduced in 1935 and ran thruough 1960, makeing it the longest in production of any model except the R. The serial number range ran from approximately 350,000 - 1, 060,00. The forend and grip were uncheckered until 1940 when checkering was added. In 1936 the semi-buckhorn rear sight replaced the adjustable sporting rear. in 1955/56 a gold bead front sight was used (this is what mine has). In 1957 they started drilling and taping for scope mounts. The model 99 marking is on the frame ring top until 1957, when it was moved to the left side of the frame ring to accomodate the scope mount holes. The cost in 1935 was $46.50 and in 1960 it was $113.65. Value today is dependant upon model, age and mostly upon condition. It also varies in different areas of the country. In Albuquerque, a good shooter in 85%-90% condition will bring $350 to $450.Info is from "The Ninety-Nine A history of the Savage Model 99 Rifle, 3rd ed. by D.P. Murray.

Most of these post WW-2 rifles were tapped by some fool, and a rubber recoil pad put on,by the samefool,or some other fool..If you have your metal buttplate, and the "99 Savage"is stamped on the left of the receiver ring, and not under the scope base..you are well obove $375.anywhere in the country..218
