colt python
How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D] 0 -
The best way is to check the serial number. As far as outward appearance goes, I don't think there is any difference between an early or a late Python; the very latest ones are called "Python Elite". The finish could also clue you in because I think Pythons were originally only available in blue; stainless ones would be a later, also nickel has been discontinued for a while now. The style of grips have changed too over the years but grips are easily replaced.First thing: check the serial number.[This message has been edited by Blokey (edited 03-24-2002).] 0 -
Actually, there were some major differences between earlier and later Pythons. For instance, the rib was higher on very early guns, with a shorter sight blade, and the barrel lug was hollow, having been drilled out from the rear. The early rear sights were different in that they had no "hump" round the elevation screw, and instead were flat with the frame top. The first grip style had checkering around the medalion and all the way to the top. The next style had checkering that did not go all the way to the top, but encircled about half the medalion. The next style had a straight line below the medalion where the checkering ended. Rubber grips followed. I cannot recall just when nickel was introduced, but I think it was well into the 1960s. I would have to do some catalog research to determine that issue. Hope this helps. 0 -
