Half moon clip w/ 9mm's
Is it possible to shoot 9mm with half-moon clips through the Smith J-frames, particularly the Model 36? I am getting one and it would sure be handy if I could fire 9mm in it w/ the moons. Pardon my apparent ingonorance in this area, but I have always been an autoloader person. Thanks.

The 38Spl chamber is too tight for the 9mm.In order for it to work, the cylinder has to be rechambered and the extractor has to be set deeper into the cylinder so that the thickness of the 9mm rim plus the thickness of the moon clip will fit between the rear of the cylinder and the firing pin bushing. It's a gunsmithing job. Rechambering to 9mm may thin the cylinder walls too much for safety. It would be an easier job to convert to the .380 since you wouldnt have to rechamber.Used Chief cylinders come up often on the auctions so you dont have to alter the original that's serial numbered to the gun. 0 -
I thought it would be something like that. Thanks much for the info and your time.'Blue

Besides the problems with rechambering, the bullet in a 38 spl is .357 whereas a 9mm is only .355. Eventhough this is not much is will tend to lose some accuracy when compared to a barrel for the correct bullet.
